COMMISSIONS
I accept a limited number of portrait commissions each year.
My work is rooted in direct observation and prioritises presence, honesty, and restraint over idealisation or performance. All portraits are painted in oil or drawn with graphite or charcoal from life wherever possible.
Approach
Each commission begins with a discussion of scale, format, and the practical conditions of sittings. I work within a small number of established formats and prefer a focused, contained process.
Portraits are developed through a series of sittings in the studio or on location. Preliminary drawing and colour studies may be made as part of this process.
I do not work to prescriptive concepts or predetermined outcomes. The painting develops through sustained observation over time.
